In addition to pit bulls that we place in foster homes, Bully Paws works very closely with animal shelters in Virginia and Maryland to facilitate pit bull adoptions. Many county shelters do not allow the adoption of pit bulls directly to the public and our role is to facilitate a safe and thoroughly screened adoption. Bully Paws currently has three ‘hubs’ in Virginia: Fredericksburg, Northern Virginia and Richmond. In each of these areas, Bully Paws has selected an Area Coordinator to be the point of contact for any questions that volunteers may have. Giving your time is one of the greatest gifts you can offer, and we truly appreciate your support. HOW DO WE RESCUE? Bully Paws “pulls” pit bulls/pit bull mixes facing euthanasia from animal control shelters throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. We have had the opportunity to save the lives of pit bulls that have come from North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Maryland, Alabama and Ohio. When we become aware of pit bull in need, we try to find an appropriate foster home for that “pittie”. Unfortunately, there are never enough available homes to meet the demand, which severely limits the number of pit bulls we can pull. Our goal is to focus on pulling highly adoptable dogs who will serve as true ambassadors for the breed. HOW DO WE REHABILITATE? Some of the dogs that we pull from shelters will have behaviors that need to be modified or ‘issues’ on which we need to work. Many of the pit bulls in shelters suffer from bad health, separation anxiety, and lack of confidence. Many have never had a home before, did not know when their next meal was going to be, or have had limited or no exposure to an actual home environment. Some may never have played with a toy. Our dogs may suffer from food/toy aggression, dog aggression, high prey drive, or high energy as a result of being caged for an extended period. These dogs are assessed by a professional trainer to determine what is needed to rehabilitate the dog and make it a well adjusted family pet. HOW DO WE RE-HOME? Bully Paws takes great pride in the adoption process. Potential adopters will complete an adoption application on our website. As soon as the application is electronically submitted, our Adoption Coordinator will send an initial response email to the applicant thanking them for their application. The team members who process adoption applications are thorough, and do their best to ensure that we place our adoptable pit bulls in wonderful homes. WHERE DO YOU FIT IN?
